Better viewed on Flickr(!) we had a fab time, over too quickly but we loved the beautiful handmade dodo cake, the glow in the dark marshmallows, the freeze dried yoghurt from Blanch & Shock and all of us ate far too much chocolate... mmm... Half Term Planning 09/26/2011
Ovbiously this is rather early but I'm very excited about taking the kids to the V&A for half term. The events look amazing and there is so much else to see for free. My three highlights to aim for are: Magic Worlds "explores the world of fairy tales and fantasy literature, the history and origins of magic and how themes of magic have influenced many artists and writers." Looks like a collection of old and magical toys will be featured and I am hoping to see a toy we own at home (The Magic Robot) working his way onto the shelves. Just please don't tell me how it's done! (I know really, just kidding myself) Fantascope, Ackermann & Co., England 1833 Museum no. E.1879-1954 The Stuff Of Nightmares "When re-told to children, fairy tales often assume an air of innocence. Good always triumphs over evil, heroes are selfless and love is everlasting. Some fairy tales however, explore the darker side of a child’s imaginary landscape. "For The Stuff of Nightmares, the Museum’s Front Room Gallery will be transformed into a sinister forest where anything might happen, the dark setting for a re-telling of The Brothers Grimm’s Fundevogel, a tale of abduction, fear, evil old women, revenge and ultimately, friendship." I grew up with the creepiest of fairy tales, love them in fact. The Grimms' ones, which were originally written for adults) have been gradually sanitised from their original publication through Victorian era into the cautionary Disney cartoon tales my children watched when they were smaller - so how will they react to the original versions? After all the stories were written for adults, and weren't tales of morality (no Aesop's fables here) the baddies sometimes got off scot free - just like in real life. Jake & Dinos Chapman's My Giant Colouring Book "The etchings featured in My Giant Colouring Book seem to be seething with grotesque imagery, and yet on closer inspection they are surprisingly innocent. "19 of the 21 images are based loosely on join-the-dots drawings from children’s picture books, which were copied through photo-etching onto copper plates. The resulting images include improvised monstrous creatures and fantastic landscapes, which deviate wildly from the prescribed dot-to-dot formation. "My Giant Colouring Book offers a brilliant introduction to the imaginations of two of Britain’s most inventive and subversive artists." I've just booked up tickets to the Experimental Food Society's annual exhibition next month at the Truman Brewery - sounds like a bit of fun. This is what the Guardian had to say about last year's event: http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2010/sep/22/experimental-food-society Read more on their website: www.experimentalfoodsociety.com Kobo Sin's Freakshow 09/23/2011
Kobo Sin's "The Murderer" (part of her Freakshow series of furniture) caught my eye tonight. I'm note sure quite why I find work about dead insects so enthralling when I run screaming from live ones? Kobo Sin Website >> Artside - Call for Venues 09/23/2011

James Thurber (1894-1961) To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see & everything to do with the way you see them. Elliott Erwitt (1928-) In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.
